Why and how wisdom teeth are removed, including recovery guidelines.

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are often removed when they are impacted, partially erupted, or causing problems such as crowding, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth. The procedure may involve simple extraction for fully erupted teeth or surgical extraction for impacted teeth that require bone removal and sectioning. Surgical wisdom tooth removal is performed under local anesthesia, often with sedation for patient comfort. The oral surgeon makes an incision in the gum tissue, removes any bone covering the tooth, and may section the tooth into pieces for easier removal. The site is then cleaned, and sutures are placed to promote healing. Recovery typically takes three to seven days. Post-operative care includes managing swelling with ice packs, taking prescribed pain medications, eating soft foods, and avoiding smoking and strenuous activity. Most patients return to normal activities within a few days, though complete bone healing may take several months.
