Dentsun

How dental tooth extractions are performed and what to expect.

Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Simple extractions are performed on visible teeth using forceps after loosening the tooth with an elevator instrument. Surgical extractions are more complex and involve teeth that have broken off at the gum line or have not fully erupted, requiring an incision in the gum tissue. Before the extraction, the area is numbed with local anesthesia. The dentist gently rocks the tooth back and forth to widen the socket before removing it. For surgical extractions, a small incision may be made and bone tissue may need to be removed to access the tooth. Stitches may be placed to promote healing. After extraction, a blood clot forms in the socket, which is essential for healing. Patients should avoid smoking, using straws, and vigorous rinsing for at least 24 hours to prevent dry socket. Pain management typically includes over-the-counter medications, and most patients recover within a few days.
