Dentsun

The light-transmitting property of teeth that creates depth and natural appearance.

Translucency is the property of enamel and dentin that allows light to partially pass through teeth, creating the depth and vitality that distinguishes natural teeth from artificial-looking restorations. Natural teeth are most translucent at the incisal edge (where enamel is thickest and unsupported by dentin), giving it a bluish or grayish appearance. Factors affecting translucency include enamel thickness and quality, underlying dentin color, presence of restorations, and age (translucency decreases as teeth wear and dentin becomes more opaque). In ceramic restorations, translucency is controlled by material selection (feldspathic porcelain is most translucent, zirconia least), layering technique, and ceramic thickness. For a natural result, the restoration must replicate the translucency gradient from opaque cervical to translucent incisal, matching adjacent natural teeth.
