Root Canal Explained

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is performed when the pulp inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, cracks, or trauma. The procedure involves removing the damaged pulp tissue, cleaning and shaping the root canals, and filling them with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. This process eliminates infection while preserving the natural tooth structure. The procedure typically requires one to two visits. After administering local anesthesia, the dentist creates an access opening in the crown of the tooth to reach the pulp chamber. Specialized instruments are used to remove infected tissue and shape the canals, which are then irrigated with antimicrobial solutions. The canals are filled and sealed, and a temporary restoration is placed. Following root canal treatment, the tooth usually requires a dental crown to provide structural support and prevent fracture. With proper care, a root canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime. Modern techniques and rotary instruments have made the procedure more efficient and comfortable than ever before.
