Proper cleaning, storage, and maintenance of orthodontic retainers.

Retainer care differs by type. Removable clear retainers (Essix) should be cleaned daily with a soft brush and cold water (hot water can warp them), stored in their case when not worn, and replaced every 1-2 years as they become cloudy or distorted. Avoid toothpaste (too abrasive) and instead use retainer cleaning tablets, mild soap, or diluted hydrogen peroxide. Hawley retainers (wire and acrylic) are more durable but require similar daily cleaning and careful handling to avoid bending the wire. Fixed retainers (bonded wire) need extra attention during brushing and flossing — use floss threaders or superfloss to clean under the wire daily. If a fixed retainer breaks or debonds, contact your orthodontist promptly as teeth can shift within days. Never eat with removable retainers in place, and always carry the case to avoid wrapping them in napkins (the #1 way retainers are lost).
