Pink Aesthetics
Evaluating and optimizing the appearance of gum tissue in dental treatment.
Pink aesthetics refers to the evaluation and management of soft tissue (gum) appearance in dental treatment, particularly around restorations, implants, and in the smile zone. The Pink Esthetic Score (PES) is a validated tool scoring seven parameters: mesial papilla, distal papilla, soft tissue level, soft tissue contour, alveolar process deficiency, soft tissue color, and soft tissue texture. Achieving optimal pink aesthetics requires: healthy gum tissue (no inflammation), adequate bone support, proper emergence profile of restorations, and appropriate tissue biotype management. In implant dentistry, pink aesthetics is especially challenging as the peri-implant soft tissue behaves differently from natural gingiva. Techniques like connective tissue grafting, provisionalization protocols, and platform switching help optimize pink aesthetics around implants.
