Pediatric Orthodontics
Overview of orthodontic evaluation and treatment options for children.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child receive an orthodontic evaluation by age 7, when enough permanent teeth have erupted to identify developing problems. Not all children evaluated at 7 will need early treatment — many will simply be monitored until more permanent teeth erupt. Common reasons for early orthodontic referral include crossbite, severe crowding, protruding upper teeth at risk of trauma, underbite, excessive spacing, and habits affecting jaw growth. Treatment may be divided into Phase I (early interceptive treatment, ages 7-10) and Phase II (comprehensive treatment, ages 11-14). Some children only need Phase II if Phase I can adequately guide development.
