Dentsun

Reasons and procedures for removing primary teeth in children.

Extraction of primary teeth is considered when the tooth is beyond restoration, there is severe infection, the tooth is causing problems for the erupting permanent successor, or orthodontic treatment requires space. The procedure is usually straightforward due to the smaller root structure and natural resorption of primary tooth roots. Local anesthesia is used, sometimes combined with nitrous oxide for anxious children. After extraction, a space maintainer may be recommended if the permanent tooth is not ready to erupt, to prevent adjacent teeth from drifting into the space. Post-operative care includes soft foods, avoiding the area while brushing, and monitoring for complications like dry socket (rare in primary teeth).
