Dental Sedation for Children
Types and safety considerations of sedation used in pediatric dentistry.
Pediatric dental sedation ranges from mild (nitrous oxide) to deep (general anesthesia). Nitrous oxide or 'laughing gas' is the most common, providing mild relaxation while the child remains conscious. Oral sedation using medications like midazolam produces moderate sedation, making the child drowsy but responsive. Deep sedation and general anesthesia are reserved for extensive procedures, very young children, or those with special needs. Strict protocols govern pediatric sedation: pre-procedure fasting, continuous monitoring of vital signs, trained personnel, and emergency equipment. Parents receive specific pre- and post-sedation instructions, including dietary restrictions and supervision requirements.
