Dry Mouth Guide
Causes, consequences, and management strategies for xerostomia (dry mouth).
Dry mouth (xerostomia) occurs when salivary glands don't produce enough saliva. Over 400 medications list dry mouth as a side effect, making it extremely common, especially in older adults. Without adequate saliva, the risk of cavities increases dramatically. Management includes sipping water frequently, using saliva substitutes, chewing sugar-free gum to stimulate production, and avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco.
