Diabetes and Oral Health
The bidirectional relationship between diabetes and dental disease.
Diabetes and gum disease have a two-way relationship: uncontrolled diabetes increases the risk and severity of gum disease, while severe gum disease can make it harder to control blood sugar. People with diabetes are 2-3 times more likely to develop periodontitis. Diabetes patients should maintain excellent oral hygiene, visit their dentist regularly, control blood sugar, and inform their dentist about their condition and medications.
