Child Dental Anxiety
Understanding and managing fear of the dentist in pediatric patients.
Dental anxiety affects 10-20% of children and can lead to avoidance of dental care, resulting in untreated oral health problems. Common triggers include fear of pain, unfamiliar environments, loud noises from dental equipment, and previous negative experiences. Behavior management techniques include tell-show-do (explaining procedures at child's level), positive reinforcement, distraction with videos or music, and gradual desensitization through multiple short visits. For severe anxiety, options include nitrous oxide sedation, oral sedation, or in rare cases, general anesthesia. Early positive dental experiences are key to preventing long-term dental phobia.
