Veneer Longevity
Factors affecting the lifespan and durability of dental veneers.
Dental veneer longevity varies by material and care. Porcelain veneers have a survival rate of 93-95% at 10 years and 83-91% at 20 years. Composite veneers show 70-80% survival at 5-7 years. Factors influencing longevity include material type, preparation design (enamel bonding vs. dentin bonding), cementation technique, occlusal forces, and patient habits. Common failure modes include fracture/chipping (most common), debonding, marginal discoloration, and secondary caries at margins. To maximize veneer life: maintain excellent oral hygiene, wear a night guard if you grind teeth, avoid biting hard objects, attend regular dental checkups, and avoid habits like nail biting or ice chewing. Properly bonded porcelain veneers are remarkably durable and offer decades of service when well maintained.
