Tooth Proportion
Ideal width-to-length ratios for natural-looking dental restorations.
Tooth proportion refers to the width-to-length ratio of individual teeth. The ideal ratio for upper central incisors is 75-80% (width is 75-80% of the length). A wider ratio creates a more masculine, square appearance; a narrower ratio appears more feminine and elegant. Average central incisor dimensions are approximately 8.5-9mm wide and 10.5-11mm long. Proportion also applies between teeth: the central incisor should be the dominant tooth, visually wider than the lateral incisor, which is wider than the canine when viewed from the front. The lateral incisor is typically 60-70% the width of the central. Understanding these proportions is essential when planning veneers, crowns, or orthodontic treatment to achieve a natural, harmonious result rather than a 'cookie-cutter' uniformity.
