Teething Remedies
Safe and effective ways to soothe teething discomfort in infants.
Effective teething remedies include chilled (not frozen) teething rings, cold washcloths for chewing, gentle gum massage with a clean finger, and chilled fruit in a mesh feeder for older babies. Over-the-counter infant pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be used as directed by a pediatrician. Parents should avoid certain products: numbing gels containing benzocaine (risk of methemoglobinemia), homeopathic teething tablets (inconsistent ingredients), and amber teething necklaces (choking and strangulation hazard). The FDA has warned against several teething products, so consulting a healthcare provider before using any medication is recommended.
