Smile Design Process
How modern smile design combines art and science for optimal results.
Smile design is a systematic approach to planning cosmetic dental treatments that considers facial proportions, lip dynamics, tooth morphology, and gingival architecture. The process begins with a comprehensive facial and dental analysis, including photographs and videos of the patient speaking and smiling in various positions. Digital smile design (DSD) software allows the dentist to create a virtual simulation of the proposed treatment outcome overlaid on the patient's photograph. This enables both the clinician and patient to visualize and discuss modifications before any treatment begins. A diagnostic wax-up or 3D-printed model translates the digital design into a physical mock-up that can be tried in the patient's mouth. The mock-up appointment is critical, allowing the patient to see and feel the proposed changes in real-time. Feedback from this stage guides refinements to the final treatment plan. This collaborative approach ensures predictable, patient-centered results and has revolutionized how cosmetic dental treatments are planned and delivered.
