Dental Treatment for Sleep Apnea
How dental appliances help manage obstructive sleep apnea.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition where the upper airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, interrupting breathing. Dental professionals play an important role in screening for and treating mild to moderate OSA using mandibular advancement devices (MADs). These custom-made oral appliances reposition the lower jaw forward during sleep, keeping the airway open. MADs are fabricated from dental impressions and are designed with adjustable mechanisms to gradually advance the mandible to the optimal position. They offer a more comfortable and portable alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, which many patients find difficult to tolerate. Compliance rates with dental appliances are generally higher than with CPAP. Dentists trained in sleep medicine conduct thorough evaluations including sleep studies, airway assessment, and dental examination before recommending treatment. Regular follow-up appointments ensure the appliance remains effective and comfortable. Side effects may include temporary jaw stiffness, bite changes, and excessive salivation, which typically resolve with adjustment.
