Shade matching is the process of selecting the correct color for dental restorations to achieve a natural, seamless result. Traditional methods use shade guides (VITA Classical with 16 shades, VITA 3D-Master with 26 shades) compared visually under standardized lighting conditions. The process evaluates hue, chroma, and value of the target teeth. Digital shade matching using spectrophotometers and colorimeters has improved accuracy significantly — studies show digital devices achieve 90%+ accuracy versus 60-70% for visual methods. Photography with standardized settings helps communicate shade information to dental laboratories. Best practices include matching shade at the beginning of the appointment (before teeth dehydrate), using natural daylight or corrected lighting, comparing at arm's length, and involving the patient in the decision.
