Dentsun

The dental implications of pacifier use in young children.

Pacifier use is considered safer than thumb sucking for dental development because it's an easier habit to break. However, prolonged use (beyond age 2-3) can cause similar issues: anterior open bite, posterior crossbite, and altered palate shape. Orthodontic pacifiers with flat bottoms are designed to reduce these effects but evidence of their advantage is limited. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends weaning pacifier use by age 3. Dipping pacifiers in honey or sweetened substances should be avoided as it promotes tooth decay. When discontinuing, gradual reduction works better than abrupt removal. Most pacifier-related bite changes reverse within 6 months of cessation if the child is still in the primary dentition stage.
