Nanofilled Composite
Advanced nanotechnology in dental composite resin materials.
Nanofilled composites incorporate filler particles in the nanometer range (1-100nm), either as individual nanoparticles or as nanoclusters (agglomerations of nanoparticles). This technology, pioneered by materials like 3M Filtek Supreme, provides a unique combination of strength, polish retention, and aesthetic properties that bridges the gap between microfilled and hybrid composites. The nanoscale filler particles allow for high filler loading (up to 79% by weight) while maintaining excellent polishability. The surface smoothness achievable with nanofilled composites reduces plaque accumulation and provides a natural-looking luster that persists over time. Their optical properties, including chameleon effect and fluorescence, help restorations blend seamlessly with surrounding tooth structure. Nanofilled composites are considered universal materials suitable for both anterior and posterior restorations. They offer good mechanical properties including adequate flexural strength and wear resistance for posterior use, combined with superior aesthetics for anterior applications. The nanotechnology also enables manufacturing of composite materials with specific optical properties such as opalescence and fluorescence that mimic natural dental tissues.
