Fluoride Varnish Application
How fluoride varnish protects teeth and prevents decay.
Fluoride varnish is a concentrated topical fluoride treatment applied to the tooth surfaces to prevent cavities, remineralize early enamel lesions, and reduce tooth sensitivity. The varnish contains 5% sodium fluoride (22,600 ppm fluoride) suspended in a resin base that adheres to the tooth surface, providing prolonged fluoride release over several hours. The application process is quick and simple, taking only a few minutes. The teeth are dried, and the varnish is painted onto all tooth surfaces using a small brush. The varnish sets on contact with saliva, forming a thin film that allows fluoride to penetrate the enamel. Patients are advised to avoid hot foods, hard or crunchy foods, and brushing for several hours after application. Fluoride varnish is recommended for patients of all ages, from infants with their first teeth to elderly patients with root caries risk. It is particularly beneficial for children at high caries risk, patients with orthodontic appliances, and individuals with dry mouth. Professional fluoride varnish treatments are typically applied every three to six months as part of a preventive care program.
