Dentsun

The aesthetic benchmark of dental ceramics for natural-looking restorations.

Feldspathic porcelain is considered the aesthetic gold standard in dental ceramics, valued for its ability to closely mimic the optical properties of natural teeth. Composed of silicon dioxide (silica), aluminum oxide, potassium oxide, and sodium oxide, it can be hand-layered to achieve exceptional depth of color, translucency gradients, and surface characterization. The layering technique involves applying successive thin layers of porcelain powders — opaque, dentin, enamel, and translucent — each with specific optical properties. A skilled ceramist can recreate the subtle internal features of natural teeth including mammelons, cracks, and color transitions. This artistic process makes feldspathic porcelain restorations among the most beautiful in dentistry. However, feldspathic porcelain has limited flexural strength (60-70 MPa), requiring a supporting substructure of metal, alumina, or zirconia for crowns and bridges. For veneers where the tooth provides support, it can be used as a standalone material. Its brittleness means it is susceptible to chipping and fracture, particularly in areas of high occlusal stress.
