How inlays and onlays provide conservative restoration for damaged teeth.

Dental inlays and onlays are indirect restorations used when a tooth has too much damage for a filling but not enough for a full crown. An inlay fits within the cusps of the tooth, while an onlay extends over one or more cusps, providing broader coverage. They are fabricated in a dental laboratory from porcelain, composite resin, or gold. The procedure requires two visits. During the first visit, the damaged tooth structure is removed, and an impression is taken. A temporary restoration is placed while the inlay or onlay is manufactured. CAD/CAM technology enables same-day fabrication in some dental offices, eliminating the need for a temporary restoration. At the second visit, the restoration is tried in, adjusted for fit and bite, and permanently bonded to the tooth. Inlays and onlays preserve more natural tooth structure than crowns, offering superior strength and longevity compared to direct fillings. They typically last 10-30 years with proper care and maintenance.
