Alveolar bone is the specialized part of the jawbone that forms the sockets (alveoli) housing tooth roots. It develops in response to tooth eruption and is maintained by the forces of chewing. After tooth loss, this bone gradually resorbs. Bone loss from gum disease or tooth extraction is a major concern for dental implant placement. Bone grafting procedures can rebuild lost bone to enable implant treatment.
